Solar blast narrowly missed earth in 2012

This article  should be a call to action to update our nation’s electric grid. NASA’s STEREO space craft detected that a coronal mass ejection that would have been similar in scale to the Carrington Event, would have hit the earth if it had happened 9 days earlier.  The big fear is that the energy surge caused by such an event would permanently damage key transformers in the electric grid that would take a long time to replace. This would cripple the electric grid long term, until new transformers could be manufactured and installed which could take over a year.

“A 2013 study estimated that a solar storm like the Carrington Event could take a $2.6 trillion bite out of the current global economy.”
