Microsoft's approach to claims based security for Sharepoint is insightful.
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh706161.aspx

Initially a similar strategy is viable for PI Coresight. Essentially claims support in the middle tier applications can be decoupled from backend database authentication.

Beyond the authentication identity mashup, claims based security also needs to be designed to minimize entitlement provisioning. Standard attribute exchanges along with well considered assurance levels and privacy controls are some of the more difficult concepts.

The NSTIC initiative is a good source for emerging materials.

Hi Rob,

Great blog post, thanks for the review of the cloud efforts.
The biggest hurdle OSIsoft have to get over is security, as you mentioned in your blog. Claims based security is that key so data from multiple organisations using different security mechanism can mash together their data in a Collaborative Work Environment in the cloud, but still only access the data they are supposed to. I think that is a huge hurdle for the PI Server itself but maybe doable for some interface...the PI to PI interface running in the cloud is actually very interesting - something I am going to think on some more.

I never used to think about PI running in the cloud, a year or so ago I thought it was a bad idea...now I have probably switched camps to it being a good idea.

Once again, thanks for the summary!

Cheers, Rhys.

I was at the conference last week. I wished I had ran across your site before now. I have also been working with PI in the pulp and paper industry for over 10 years now. There has been a tremendous amount of change since the old piconfig days. OSI has became the Cadillac of historians. I currently support all of the PI sites at Weyerhaeuser and have completed many value added projects at these sites but still feel I have only scratched the surface.
I commend you for taking the step and going out on your own and starting what appears to be a thriving business. I hope to one day do the same or at least doing some part-time PI consulting. Give me a call sometime, I am sure we have a lot we could talk about!
